Clark Wendlandt’s game plan

Clark Wendlandt ranks at the top of the list in terms of experience on the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario.

Wendlandt landed in third place on the Day 1 leaderboard with 26 pounds, 3 ounces. Here is what he told me this morning about his game plan for the day.

“Yesterday I really caught them good, but I really didn’t fish that many areas that I knew about,” he said. “I just went looking for fish most of the day, because I caught them early.”

He continued, “I’ve got shallow and deep fish. The wind should not be a factor today. It’s out of the north, which is good.”

He made one thing for certain. And that was he loves the lake, because that is where the quality fish live.

“I was really surprised at the lack of boats and fishing pressure,” he said.

Another thing is for certain. And that is boating conditions on the lake will go downhill beginning tomorrow, when the wind shifts out of the north, to the southwest.

Where the river and lake neck down is where the most treacherous boating (and fishing) conditions exist on a strong southwest wind. It’s fishable, but it takes someone with much experience to handle both. Wendlandt is someone who can handle it.
