A good bag

Maverick Winford caught a bunch of small fish on Day 1 of the National Championship and only weighed in one fish yesterday, but he’s working on a good bag today.

Winford is from Atascocita High School in Houston and just caught his third fish in Byrd Bay with a 3/4-ounce spinnerbait.

He is currently on a school of fish, both smallmouth and largemouth, located off a shallow bar and has had to weed through some smaller fish to get to some more quality fish.

The shallow bar has scattered brush and mussels around it. Winford has been sitting in 10 feet and throwing into 20 feet of water most of the morning but has backed off into 20 feet.

A Carolina rig and a drop shot have been producing bites consistently this week, but with heavier winds, Winford switched to the spinnerbait about 9:30 a.m.

Winford said it is also a timing deal.
