The Hunt is On

This one's going to be short. I've been on the road for a few weeks, so I'm spending some time with my family and trying to do a little deer hunting.

The rest of the offseason is manageable. Most of my professional commitments are for a couple of days rather than a couple of weeks. I like that better. Travel's not all it's cracked up to be when you have a family.

That's especially true after a long season. You need some downtime with the ones you love. I'm not complaining, though. It could be worse — like not having any professional commitments in the offseason. That would definitely be worse.

I spent last week hunting and saw several good bucks. I'm only interested in mature deer — those between 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 years old. I saw one good one. He was big enough to shoot. I'd say he would have scored in the 145 plus range on the Boone and Crockett scoring system. But I couldn't get him in close enough. That day belonged to him.

I bow hunt and want to make sure my shots are good. The last thing I want to do is wound a big one. And besides, there are a couple of weeks left in the season. I don't want to get in a hurry.

I've also been working with the boys, helping them practice with their bows. They get better every day. I hope to be able to take them out hunting next week, weather permitting.

It's supposed to rain for a few days. I don't like to hunt in the rain. It's very difficult to track under those circumstances. The last thing I want is a wounded deer that I can't find. That's not what the sport is about.

I need to go. I'll let you know next week if we got the deer or if they got us.
