Rain on the way

Friends and family watch from the bank.

The 149 teams competing in the Carhartt Bassmaster Series at St. Lawrence River presented by Bass Pro Shops put on a show Wednesday during Day 1 of the three-day tournament on New York’s northern border.

Teams are expecting another great day of fishing Thursday, but they likely will get wet in the process.

There’s a 90-percent chance of rain in upstate New York this morning and temperatures are not likely to climb above the low 60s all day.

Though it not raining as of 9:45 a.m. in the Waddington area, there is significant cloud cover and it’s growing increasingly dark. That’s noteworthy because almost every team I spoke with yesterday is sight fishing this week.

There are, of course, differing theories on spotting bass in these conditions. Some anglers say they can’t see through the water column as well with grey skies overhead. Others believe the bass can’t see them either, so it’s a push.

Because the St. Lawrence River is extremely clear right now, chances are there won’t be a significant drop-off in productivity when the Day 2 weigh-in begins at 1:30 p.m. ET.
