Spots vs. largemouth

The fishery at Lake Norman currently is weighted toward one species of bass.

“I’d say the lake right now has 70% spotted bass,” Cherry said.

That might seem to indicate it’s smart to target spots, but Cherry said he believed largemouth definitely should be part of the winner’s game plan.

“I think the winner will have a mix,” he said.

Why? Because, while there are fewer largemouth in the lake, those are the kickers that can set you apart from the pack.

“There are 5- to 6-pound largemouth in here,” he said.
