Where I’m at

Okay, for all of my friends, and my wife and two kids, who keep texting me asking me, “So where is this Miley Locks?” or “…is it cold up there in Canada?” I’m doing this show-and-tell for the geographically challenged who can text me.

This is where I’m at.

It’s “Mille Lacs” and that’s French for “a thousand lakes,” except though Mille Lacs is only, you know, one lake, and a big one, 207 square miles (and maybe even bigger since it’s basically a round lake and they may not have figured in the curves while measuring the squares).

It is 1,304.6 miles from my house to here so I flew here like this eagle.

I have to say whatever we did to help these guys survive was right on because there is nothing like watching these majestic birds soar above you. There were two of them flying around when I got here, I took photos of both but the other photo was so out of focus it looked like a parrot flying around, and you’ll just have to trust me that there were two majestic eagles in the skies above me and not a majestic eagle and a parrot.

Dudes…Harmon Killebrew made root beer, who knew.

Up here in Mille Lacs (French) you can get Root Beer with Number 3 on it, I can’t tell you how excited I was for this find (or how many I bought since I’m supposed to be “cleansing” from sugar). I used to have tons of Mr. Killebrew baseball cards as a kid, some (and I formally apologize to his family now) I put in the spokes of my bicycle, others I kept until my mother threw my baseball card shoebox out when I moved out of the house and got married. And just for the record, Jimmy (my son) you have no idea how close you came to being a Harmon for the rest of your life.

It’s very pretty up here in America but north of Montreal on the globe, the trees are just starting to turn colors, the weather is that kind of weather you wish for in sticky old July, up here it’s blue skies and water, highs in the mid 70s, lows around 50…sandals with fleece kind of days.

Everyone I’ve talked to is pretty excited we are doing this AOY gig here again, going to be a close finish this year, people are sprucing things all up…

…and like last year we will launch from Eddy’s launch place thing, it’s free to come out and watch, the Elite guys are pretty friendly so you can walk the docks and say “hey,” and I’ll be out there walking around in the morning too, feel free to come by and say “hey” to me as well ‘specially if you bring some Number 3 Root Beer. Takeoff is at 6:40 a.m. which is just a little bit past having a late night.

I’m a fan of Minnesota, fan of how pretty things are around here, I’ve now seen personally 1/10,000th of their lakes here and if the other 9,999 are anything like this you need to be putting this state on your “must see” sights.

So come on up for this AOY gig, I’ll save a seat for you or…

…bring a friend, got that covered too, but know this…

…at the end of this event one young man’s life will be totally even cooler because from Sunday on whenever we say, or write that young man’s name, three letters will always precede it…

…AOY…
