Gear Review: The Athena portable energy system

WHAT IS IT?

The Athena portable energy system

WHAT SETS IT APART?

Following its larger and more powerful Zeus portable jump starter/charger, released in 2018, Uncharted Supply Co. has introduced a more compact model, the Athena. Though slimmer in size, the Athena packs a 16000mAh capacity — sufficient power to jumpstart a car or power a laptop. Boasting a waterproof, dust-proof (IP67) and shock-resistant design, the Athena’s compact size and light weight make it convenient to carry in a vehicle, luggage or gear bag.

HOW DO I USE IT?

Created to offer a portable energy system for smaller engines and day-to-day use, the Athena is capable of jumpstarting up to a 6.0L gasoline or diesel engine in seconds. Capable of doing so as many as 20 times with one charge, the Athena features intelligent battery clamps with eight protections built in to prevent sparks or shocks, even if used incorrectly. The Athena can also quickly power a laptop or mobile phone with USB-C, Micro USB and two USB ports.

HOW MUCH?

$130

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

You have to appreciate the apropos nomenclature, as Greek Mythology presents Athena as the daughter of Zeus. Uncharted Supply’s Athena brings serious charging capabilities, along with a three-in-on LED built-in flashlight that illuminates your path and lights up an engine for safe operations in emergency scenarios. Athena’s high-level voltage multiplier generates high output by allowing all four battery cells to work simultaneously. The result is prolonged battery life and stronger battery jump capabilities.
