Gear Review: Berkley Choppo

What is it?

Berkley Choppo

What sets it apart?

Berkley has improved on the concept of a noisy, sputtering topwater bait by giving the Choppo a rigid tail, that won’t succumb to heat warping in a hot tackle box. Moreover, the enhanced surface area provides more sound and spray, while the bait’s precision balance delivers immediate action and keeps the Choppo swimming straight, without rolling at a variety of speeds. All this combines for an attention-getting topwater bait designed to produce aggressive topwater strikes.

How do I use it?

A truly user-friendly style, this chunk-and-wind bait does the work for you. Design for easy casting, the Choppo comes in two sizes a 120 (4 1/4 inches, 1 ounce), which fares best in choppy conditions, and a 90 (3 2/7 inches, 1/2 ounce), that delivers on calmer days. Both sizes include Berkley’s Fusion 19 hooks, which feature a needle point SlickSet Coating for easier penetration

Angler’s insight:

Berkley has packed a lot of design features into an attractive bait below that $10 mark. That tail design will prevent a lot of frustration by eliminating the potential for performance-diminishing misshaping. After all, that aft action — lots of noise and commotion — is what makes this prop bait so effective. Berkley did a nice job on the colors, as well, with key details like the chartreuse edges on the Ghost Bluegill pattern.
