Gear Review: G Loomis NRX+

WHAT IS IT?

G.Loomis NRX+

WHAT SETS IT APART?

Seasoned anglers know that no one rod does it all. Seizing on that point, G.Loomis introduces an impressive lineup of 28 NRX+ rods (16 casting models and 12 spinning) with technique-specific actions and powers. Each rod starts with an American-made blank fortified with proprietary Spiral X technology, which utilizes a triple-layer construction. A middle layer of vertical fibers is matched with inner and outer layers of carbon tape that tightly wind the blank diagonally in opposite directions. Increasing torsional rigidity without adding weight or bulk, this process provides rapid power transmission for increased casting distance, heightened sensitivity and maximum fish-fighting leverage.

HOW DO I USE IT?

NRX+ rods feature a hybrid guide train, which promotes long, accurate casts to cover more water and boost effectiveness. Also included are Fuji Titanium stripper guides with SiC inserts, and ultra-light, ultra-strong RECOIL guides. Made from a nickel-titanium memory alloy, these light, strong guides handle impacts and return to their original shape. With solid or split-grip cork handles, NRX+ rods boast custom-designed CI4+ casting reel seats, which maximize connection to the blank for unsurpassed bite detection and decrease forearm fatigue.

HOW MUCH?

$595 to $625

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

G.Loomis really fixated on ultra-precise rod building here, and the NRX+ series shows the fruits of this effort, particularly in the proprietary Multi-Taper Design. Comprising a series of “micro tapers” within a rod’s overall taper, this process enabled engineers to use more material on potential stress points and less material elsewhere. This yielded a broad range of precisely defined rod lengths, powers and actions that blend durability and performance.
