Gear Review: Scosche PowerUp Torch

WHAT IS IT?

Scosche PowerUp Torch

WHAT SETS IT APART?

In a compact package you get three tools in one. Those are a mobile device charger, multi-mode LED flashlight and a 600-amp jump starter. That’s enough juice to jump start engines up to 5.0L V8 (gas) and 2.0L (diesel), and more than enough to jumpstart an outboard motor battery. The PowerUp 600 Torch holds a charge for up to six months, and it’ll provide up to three boosts before needing a charge. It comes with a space-saving, zip-up hard case that tucks inside a storage compartment. Includes: flashlight/powerbank/jump starter, jump start cables, USB-A car charger and USB-A to USB-C cable.

HOW DO I USE IT?

Detachable jump start cables are spark-free, which protects the power bank from a short circuit. Remove those cables, and you can plug your smartphone or tablet into the 5-volt USB port to charge it up. The 330-Lumen flashlight has four modes for varying needs.

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

Bassmaster Elite Series pro Carl Jocumsen keeps a PowerUp 600 Torch inside his boat for personal use and for whenever he encounters a stranded boater. Also think about the peace of mind you have knowing you won’t get stranded at a remote boat ramp after fishing all day and returning after dark to find your truck battery is dead. As a kayak angler, I keep mine in my Outback for off-road trips to remote access sites on rivers and streams. I never worry about needing a jump — for my car battery or iPhone — because it’s always at the ready in that compact case.
