Benedictine prep team hosting open fundraiser

The Benedictine College Preparatory Fishing Team is holding an open tournament April 14 on the James River to raise funds for the Virginia B.A.S.S. Nation club’s expenses.

Richmond, Va. — The Benedictine College Preparatory Fishing Team is inviting anglers to compete in the club’s first Open Fundraising Bass Fishing Tournament April 14 on the James River.

The benefit tournament was proposed to Virginia B.A.S.S. Nation Youth Director Jack Babcock by Ike Andrews, founder and president of the Benedictine College Preparatory Fishing Team. Andrews and Jake Schattner won the Virginia Nation High School State Championship last year and qualified for the 2017 Bassmaster High School National Championship.

“The big thing for me is I went to Nationals last year and I know – like any other fishing trip – how much money it costs,” Andrews said. “So we just want to raise some extra money for whoever is able to go to Nationals because we will be sending more teams from Virginia than we have in the past.”

Andrews plans for 20 percent of the tournament proceeds to go to the Benedictine fishing team for the club’s expenses and the Virginia Nation High School program for a set of digital scales. “I am trying to raise money to get a set of digital scales that lock and they are not cheap,” Babcock said.

The tournament entry fee is $70 per boat with an 80 percent payout. There will be an optional $10 biggest bass fee with 100 percent payout.
