“There is an entire band of us anglers that stay in campgrounds, and this is my setup. Some of the kids around here call what’s behind me the ‘doll house camper’ because it’s smaller than most. That’s okay, it’s all I need to be comfortable and live on the road.”

“I cannot do without coffee in the morning. And because I live in a doll house, I don’t have room for a fancy K-cup style coffee maker with all the bells and whistles.”
1. Mister Coffee Simple Brew 4-Cup Switch Coffee Maker; Dunkin Donuts Original Blend Coffee. “It’s my favorite coffee and the brewer makes just four cups, and I drink them all to get going in the morning.”

2. Cuda 3-inch Titanium Bonded Micro Scissors. “I used to always have trouble using a Modified Albright knot when tying it to a fluorocarbon leader on a spinning reel. The connection would catch in the guides, and cause the drop shot to swing back around and foul. Then came along these scissors. They cut braid, even without tension, and leave a smooth finish, never leaving frayed ends in the braid. It’s the best investment I ever made in a small hand tool, and I never have any problems making a cast. The scissors also work with any other line, and are ideal for trimming baits.”

“A lot of people don’t know that I prefer fishing in shallow water. I’m more associated for fishing in deep water, originally coming from the West Coast, and guiding on Table Rock Lake. Well, here’s a surprise. It’s my favorite bait for shallow water.”

3. Azuma Matt Reed Square Boss Crankbait. “Especially in fall, this bait is ideal for fishing in the backs of creeks and around laydowns and rocks. It has an extra-tough, chip-resistant lip that is more durable than plastic, so you can fish it longer and with confidence around the heavy cover. I like the chartreuse/black back as an all-around best color.”

4. St. Croix Legend Tournament Series Casting Rod (8-foot Heavy/Moderate/Fast); Bass Pro Shops Johnny Morris Platinum Signature Baitcast Reel; Zoom Z Craw. “If I had one perfect, all-around combo and bait package, this is it. I rig it with a 4/0 Mustad hook and 20-pound line. I feel confident anytime I use this rod, knowing I can depend on it for getting big fish out of docks or heavy grass. It is my all-time setup for catching fish in close quarters.”

5. Hallmark Greeting Cards. “This is my favorite of the five things. I’ve been married (to Megan) for 20 years and a tournament angler the entire time, so I am unfortunately away from home a lot. Before each trip, she hides cards with upbeat, inspirational message throughout the camper.”

“Sometimes there might be three or four cards, and I find them during the trip. I never know what she’ll write inside the card, and it’s always a nice surprise. It’s one of those things that I look forward to on the road.”
