Lake Champlain, or Lac Champlain as the French Canadians call it laps the banks of two countries, U.S. of A. and Canada, and two states, New York and Vermont. It is a bit over 500 square miles of water, and as you can see here see’s its fair share of stormy weather.

The lake has something like 80 islands scattered throughout it and is part of this thing called the Great Appalachian Valley that stretches from Quebec in Canada all the way down to Alabama.

Water lives here for about three years, then it leaves, goes somewhere, I don’t know where but I found out long ago while doing a story about sand migration (another gig) that water, molecules of water move, split from where they are at and go elsewhere. Lake Champlain water stays in their digs for three years or so, which is pretty short for lakes, which is why I call freshwater like this, sweetwater the less it hangs around the sweeter it is. Groundwater, close to the top groundwater hangs out for 100-200 years, the deep stuff has been measured as old as 10,000 years. Droplets of the H2O stuff in the air…nine days. Go figure.
