Zaldain’s textbook catch

Chris Zaldain paused his quest to catch a double-digit smallmouth tailrace. He picked up a flipping stick and applied a technique that any angler can use this spring.

Zaldain ventured into an eddy off the main channel, where debris collected in a calm pool. A flip into the flotsam produced a nice largemouth using the cover of the debris as an ambush point.

“Rising, dingy water during spring creates floating habitat for the largemouth,” he said. “Always be on the lookout for this scenario as you are looking for bass during the spawning cycle.”
