High school teams help place habitat

by Dawn Culpepper

On Feb. 2, 2019, the Harris County High Bass Fishing Team and Callaway High Bass Fishing Team together with some community fisherman took part in placing fish habitat in West Point Lake. With help from the West Point Corp of Engineers the Georgia DNR Wildlife Resources division, we were able to place over 120 Christmas trees in West Point Lake in shallow water for bass fingerlings, as well as some deeper areas for larger fish. The Corp also sank several spider blocks as additional habitat.

Both Harris County and Callaway High collected trees after Christmas for this event. We plan to hopefully make this a yearly event. West Point Lake was at one time a prime lake for big events like the Bassmaster Elites, and hopefully we can help make West Point a draw for big high school, college and pro events again.
