Dateline: The 50th Bassmaster Classic

Little known fact, on the day that the Bassmaster Classic was born, day one of this Classic gig, 339 miles away from Lake Mead in Long Beach, Calif., a young male child was born.

His name, Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., oh, forgot … aka Snoop Dog.

Told you, gotta love “little knowns.”

On that day 50 Classics ago, the no. 1 song on the music charts was Rod Stewart’s “Maggie May.”

Television’s no. 1 show was All In The Family, followed by The Flip Wilson Show and Marcus Welby, M.D.

Gas was 40 cents a gallon, a postal stamp was 8 cents. Wanna see a movie … $1.50 a ticket. A jar of peanut butter was 59 cents.

Walt Disney World in the then small town of Orlando, Fla., opened, FedEx launched its first delivery flight and the front man for the DOORS, Jim Morrison, died.

Little knowns.

This is my 13th Classic, the 12th of which where I know what it is about and what is going on.

Just saying.

Of all the ones I’ve been at this one has a different vibe and not because of the participants but what it is they are participating in …

… the big FIVE-O.

Even people in the town/hotel feel the golden vibe. One even came up to me and said, “Imagine this won’t happen again until 3020.”

Um, hmm, um …  in cases like this I’ve learned it’s best to just smile.

I believe every day is game day. Every time you suit up … game day, every time you plug in the keyboard …game day, every cast … game day, so in theory this should be just like any other Classic, big, but you know what I mean …

… but nope!

Everyone walking through these doors this “check-in” day, they know how special this gig is, only will be one 50th.

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

Hope you can make it, it’s going to be special. It’s the one years from now I’ll look back on and smile because I was invited to be a part of it.

And I’ll start as soon as it ends getting in shape for the …

… 1,050th Classic.
