Gear Review: AFTCO Pufferfish 300 Jacket

WHAT IS IT?

AFTCO Pufferfish Jacket

WHAT SETS IT APART?

Everyone needs a “puffy” jacket in their lineup of outdoors wear. AFTCO has designed a solid option with a nice blend of form and function. I took the Pufferfish for a spin during the Christmas week and, while my coastal Georgia destination saw none of the white stuff, a sharp temperature drop and stout winds demonstrated this jacket’s ability to keep me warm. The Pufferfish has just enough collar to keep some wind off the neck, but it’s not designed to be your primary foul weather item; more of a cool morning on the lake, or a versatile piece for terrestrial activities.

HOW DO I USE IT?

Made with a 100% polyester melange outer, 80-gram synthetic batting fill and 600 mm Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) coating, the Pufferfish features 20D poly sublimated liner, along with zippered brushed tricot hand warmer and chest pockets. The design also includes poly-elastane binding sweep (bottom edge) and cuff, Durable Water Repellent (DWR) and fully taped seams. AFTCO makes the Pufferfish available in sizes S-XXL, the Pufferfish comes in charcoal or navy.

HOW MUCH?

$119

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

I found that with my usual Large sizing, the Pufferfish has a pleasantly snug fit; not a lot of extra space. I often wear a hooded sweatshirt under my main jacket, and if I want a hooded feature in conjunction with the Pufferfish, I’d go with a lighter item like the Samaurai Sun Protection Hoodie Shirt, maybe with a thermal base layer and then a rain jacket, if needed. While I always appreciate an interior jacket pocket, the chest pocket and hand warming pockets were sufficient for the small items I carried.
