Gear Review: Shakespeare EZ-Grow 4+ Combo

WHAT IS IT?

Shakespeare EZ-Grow 4+ Combo

WHAT SETS IT APART?

Give a young angler a full-sized fishing rod and it’s probably going to be overkill. I may be more of a burden than a help. Conversely, a tiny rod in the hands of an older child will be a discouraging limitation. Shakespeare came up with a sound solution with its EZ-Grow 4+ Combo, which features a spincast reel and a telescoping rod that expands from 2 feet, 10 inches to 3 feet, 7 inches to 4 feet, 6 inches. The idea is to give young anglers a rod that grows with them, helps them learn to cast and maximizes comfort along the way.

HOW DO I USE IT?

The EZ-Grow 4+ Combo includes an oversized reel knob attachment and extended push button that facilitates casting and retrieving. Both features can be removed and adjusted as the angler grows. Pre-spooled with brightly-colored line that’s easy for young anglers to monitor, Shakespeare’s new combo comes in purple, orange, seafood green and blue color options.

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

No slight to any piece of equipment that sparks a young angler’s interest, but I’ve always believed that giving kids a “real” fishing outfit was the right move. Not every child will have the interest or ability to pursue anything bigger than the juvenile bluegill swarming docks and other easy access points. For those that do — and those pleasantly surprised by a foot-long bass, catfish or jumbo ‘gill — Shakespeare has created a combo that will let young anglers play at both ends of the field.
