One of the most beloved figures in all of professional fishing will be having brain surgery today. Former Elite angler Aaron Martens suffered a series of seizures while fishing on Saturday.
Tests revealed two lesions on Martens’ brain. Surgeons will remove one on Monday; additional testing will be done to determine the next treatment steps.
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak and related hospital protocol, Martens’ family (wife Lesley, kids Jordan and Spencer, and his mom Carol) is not allowed in the hospital with him.
Martens, a three-time Bassmaster Angler of the Year, grew up in California, but has lived for many years in Leeds, Ala. He is hospitalized at Grandview Medical Center in Birmingham, where the surgery will take place.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Aaron and the whole Martens family,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “This has to be particularly hard since the family can’t be with him. We urge all Bassmaster fans to join us in praying that Aaron has a full recovery.”

He has been able to fully interact with his family. We are very happy for the family and hope the following days will be full of healing. Consultation with his doctors will continue. But what a wonderful thing. Aaron’s wife and children have been able to interact with him on FaceTime! The hope is for him to be home tomorrow if all checks out!”
