Don’t count on it

The tournament on Lake Jordan started a day late for the Texas pro, Kelly Jordon. He still isn't sure whether he got caught in a time warp, or just plain ran out of luck here during the opening day of the Berkley Powerbait Trophy Chase.

Jordan doldrums

During practice, Gerald Swindle had a monster bass flush a topwater and he managed to shake it off. Returning to the exact spot early on the first day of the tournament yielded another big bite, but when Swindle set the hook, the bass wrapped his line around an obstruction and broke off.

As I sit on the dock and write this, I can see and hear 12 of the best of the best race back and forth across Lake Jordan, allegedly chasing Bass. In fact, they chase themselves, and what lies inside.

Mother lode

Kelly Jordon feels the trouble with Lake Jordan is that there are so many good-looking humps and ledges, but not all of them have any fish on them. He stares at his sonar screen and studies the structure that it's revealing in hopes of finding that elusive mother lode.

Michael Iaconelli, Gerald Swindle and Todd Faircloth, all considerably behind Bassmaster Angler of the Year points leader Kevin VanDam, should be considered pre-tournament favorites if going by how they fared in practice.

Under pressure

Most of the pros are on a merry-go-round, concentrating on a 1/2-mile area within sight of each other at Mitchell Dam. The tightness of the area is because of the current the dam is expected to create during the two days of competition.
