Matt Herren couldn't wipe the wide smile off his face after he returned to the Lake Guntersville State Park dock Friday afternoon.
It was as if the two Alabama pros had picked up where they left off at the Southern Open on South Carolina's Santee Cooper Reservoir last May, when Tharp won, leaving second place to Herren.
The top three in the final points standings earn berths in the Bassmaster Classic next February on the Red River in Shreveport, La. The top 10 will be invited to fish on the 11-event Bassmaster Elite Series that begins in March on Lake Amistad.
Many of the pros, sitting atop bags much bigger than anticipated, targeted the bass holed up the large grass mats.
About 200 Southern Open pros will compete Oct. 16-18 for the event's title and $45,000 first-place prize. An equal number of co-anglers will be out to win their division's first-place prize, a boat package valued at $32,000.
Known as one of the better bass fisheries in the South, this northeast Alabama reservoir is the beneficiary of stable water levels and lots and lots of grass.
Several Elite pros will be anxiously watching the final Southern Open on Guntersville Lake this week, hoping for a miracle of sorts. They're the bubble guys.
I was impressed. It seemed like the bass were grabbing my bait harder and holding on longer.
